If you have a condition that requires medications, antibodies, nutrients, or fluids to be delivered through a needle or catheter, that intravenous (IV) therapy or treatment typically happens at either a hospital, place of residence or ambulatory infusion center (AIC). When choosing the location of your therapy, your doctor will work with you to consider convenience, comfort, privacy, cost, and the details about your specific health condition and needs.

What Is an ambulatory infusion center (AIC)?

An AIC is a specialized facility dedicated to infusion therapy and treatment services that are continuously supervised by trained healthcare professionals. AICs like those operated by specialty infusion provider California Specialty Pharmacy (CSP) offer you a safe, comfortable, and medically monitored environment for receiving infusion therapies outside the home, hospital, nursing home, or doctor’s office. AICs have specialized equipment for administering infusions and offer more comfort and privacy than an in-hospital infusion center.

What type of patients receive therapy/treatment at an AIC?

Patients who need regular infusions include those with chronic conditions such as:

  • Neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), myasthenia, Guillain-Barré syndrome and inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Immune deficiencies like primary immunodeficiency and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID)
  • Cancer
  • Infections

In addition, infusion therapy may be used for patients who are unable to take oral medications, who need medications to be delivered into the body quickly, who require antibodies to be infused into the bloodstream (IV immunoglobulin therapy), or who need large medication doses that may be harsh on the digestive system.

How can an AIC improve my treatment experience?

Many people who receive infusion therapies prefer an AIC to an in-hospital center for several reasons:

  • AICs provide specialized care for your safety and well-being. CSP’s AICs are staffed by healthcare professionals trained in infusion therapy/treatments and providing support and education. Your care team will manage any side effects or complications that may arise during therapy/treatment.
  • You will find a comfortable environment to reduce the stress of your treatment. CSP’s locations offer safe, relaxed, and caring spaces that may include comfortable seating, private treatment rooms, TVs, Wi-Fi, and refreshments.
  • AICs may be closer to your home and save you time. They are typically found in easy-access locations in your community, which may reduce your travel time and help avoid crowded hospital settings. Plus, AICs typically have reduced wait times for infusion appointments and appointment times that better fit your daily routine (as compared to hospitals).
  • You may save money by choosing an AIC. You may reduce your medical costs by receiving your therapy at an AIC. They are often less expensive than hospitals when it comes to infusion care. In fact, when compared to the hospital setting, ambulatory facilities can reduce the administration costs of specialty medications by at least 50 percent for the top 10 medical procedures, supplies, products, and services.
  • The care team at an AIC can help you better manage your health. CSP’s care teams educate you and your family or caregivers about the therapy process, potential side effects, and self-care measures. Our nurses and medical professionals are trained to focus on your needs and help you manage your condition effectively and confidently.
  • You may find a supportive community of other patients at an AIC. There often are other patients at an AIC who have the same condition or receive the same treatments as you, so you might develop relationships with people who share your experiences. This can create a sense of community and support that a lot of patients appreciate.
  • AICs provide coordinated care. At CSP’s infusion centers, you receive personalized care that follows a plan tailored to your needs. We communicate closely with your healthcare team to ensure that everyone is working together to help you receive your medication, stay on your treatment plan, and manage your condition.

As one of California’s leading specialty infusion providers, CSP provides infusion therapy at AICs in California. The company also offers specialty pharmacy, home infusion, and ambulatory infusion services at partner sites in Hawaii, operating as Hawaii Specialty Pharmacy.
